Full Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE

Lawson-Fenning designs and builds furniture in Los Angeles. The largest branch of our business is the LF Collection of handmade furniture. We supplement our own designs with vintage 20th-century works and well-edited home goods we think are missing from the marketplace: limited-release ceramics, tabletop, and gifts.

We're growing quickly and need an experienced Purchasing & Planning Manager to build a scalable purchasing model that can grow with us. Our purchasing spans made-to-order custom designs, material and component inventory, and limited in-stock goods — each with different planning demands.

This role owns the operational flow of inventory: forecasting where required, executing purchase orders, driving on-time delivery, and keeping order status accurate and visible across our teams. Success is measured through order accuracy, on-time shipment, inventory availability and productivity, and clear cross-functional communication.

This is a working manager role. You'll build the processes, lead the team, develop talent, and evolve the function toward long-range planning as the company scales.

WHAT YOU’LL OWN

Purchasing & Order Execution

Convert demand — made-to-order, stocked materials and components, and limited in-stock goods — into accurate, on-time purchase orders.
Own PO accuracy and the discipline of order execution: right quantities, right terms, right dates, clean records.
Drive supplier accountability for on-time shipment; escalate slips and run recovery when dates are at risk.
Maintain and publish inventory availability and expected ship dates so customer-facing teams are working from current information.

Inventory Flow & Planning

Own the flow of materials, components, and stocked goods across the supplier network — right inventory, right place, right time, without carrying excess.
Forecast where forecasting applies: materials and components for made-to-order production, and the limited in-stock and home-goods lines.
Monitor in-stock levels, aging, and over/under positions; recommend buys, reorders, and rationalization.
Build the planning cadence that ties purchase timing to production readiness.

Reporting & Inventory Health

Stand up inventory health reporting and the KPIs that go with it — availability, aging, on-time performance, order accuracy.
Build reporting leadership can read at a glance: status, risk, upcoming constraints.
Partner with Finance on inventory projections and COGS inputs as the data foundation matures.

Cross-Functional Coordination

Serve as the operational connection between Purchasing and Production, Sales, Merchandising, Design, and Finance.
Keep forecasted demand, purchase timing, and production readiness aligned.
Communicate inventory changes, risks, and opportunities clearly and early — no surprises downstream.

Build & Lead the Function

Build the purchasing and planning function from its current state into a scalable structure.
Establish the process, cadence, and system discipline the function runs on.
Develop the team as it grows; add roles in purchasing, material planning, or inventory control as volume warrants.

KEY METRICS

Where measurable today:

Purchase order accuracy
Vendor on-time ship performance
Accuracy of customer-facing availability dates
In-stock percentage on stocked lines

As reporting infrastructure matures:

Inventory turnover and aging
Forecast accuracy (materials, components, in-stock lines)
Inventory productivity and efficiency

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

7+ years in purchasing, planning, forecasting, supply chain, or inventory management.
5+ years in progressive leadership roles, ideally including building or restructuring a function rather than only running an established one.
Strong analytical skills; advanced Excel with working knowledge of a BI/visualization tool (Tableau, Looker, or similar).
Experience with ERP and inventory management systems (we run Cin7 Omni, QuickBooks, and Airtable); ability to get productive quickly in an evolving systems environment matters more than any specific platform.
Comfort building reporting and interpreting data models — this role stands up much of its own measurement.
Solid grasp of inventory productivity and planning metrics.
Experience in made-to-order, custom, or configurable production a strong plus; furniture or home a plus.
Experience with international suppliers a plus.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships and lead cross-functional work without direct authority.
Strategic mindset paired with execution discipline and strong follow-through.
Los Angeles-based (on-site).
